How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

2021 Tesla Model Y Exterior
If you’ve thought of going electric, you may be wondering, “How long does it take to charge an electric car?” The answer to this question depends on which charging option you choose. Land Rover Flatirons has created this guide to break down electric charging times based on the charging method, so that you can anticipate your charging needs before making the switch!

Your Three Electric Charging Options

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): A normal, three-prong 110V/120V charging outlet (Level 1 Charging) typically takes about 24 hours or more.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: A professionally-installed Level 2 Charger uses rapid (usually 240V+) chargers most often made the brand of car you own. With faster charging rates, your battery can often reach 80% charge in about a half hour. However, that extra 20% will take longer to charge thanks to the diminishing charge rates.
  3. Public Charging: These are typically Level 2 Chargers (though you can sometimes find Level 3) but can vary in charging speed. These can be found at hotels, grocery stores, malls, restaurants, and more.

Electric Car Charging Times

Domestic car charging times vary based on whether you choose Level 1 or Level 2 charging. Here’s more on that:

  • Level 1 EV Charging Times- Often take a day or more
  • Level 2EV Charging Times- Typically takes hours; a full charge can often be had overnight
  • Level 3EV Charging Times- Vehicle can be fully recharged in an hour or less

Public vs. Private Charging

Home chargers often charge at a slower rate because they offer 3.7 kW or 7 kW charging. On the other hand, public charging stations can provide 22 kW charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, or 150 kW rapid charging. This variation is why at some places you could get a 100% charge in an hour while using another charger could take 11 hours to get the same results.
