Changing Oil in a Range Rover Sport

Before changing the oil in a Range Rover Sport, you’ll first want to check your owner’s manual for the correct oil type and oil filter your vehicle requires. You can stop by the Land Rover Flatirons parts center to find the oil and filter for your model. Once you have the correct oil, you’ll need a car jack, a vehicle ramp, or an automotive vacuum to gain access when draining the oil. Additionally, you’ll need wrenches, an oil filter wrench, a drain pan, a funnel, and gloves. Let’s go over the steps of a Range Rover Sport oil change:

1. Prepare your vehicle. Depending on your model, you can raise the Range Rover Sport suspension for easy access underneath the vehicle. On the other hand, you can use a vehicle ramp or a car jack and jack stands to raise and secure the vehicle. Note: You can use an automotive vacuum to remove the old oil through the oil cap under the hood. However, you may not remove all the old oil this way.
2. Remove the skid plate using wrenches. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual can instruct you on how.
3. Locate the oil filter and drain plug. Place the drain pan under the drain plug and remove the oil filler cap. This will help improve airflow and decrease drain time.
4. Put on gloves and take the oil drain plug out. To remove the oil drain plug, you’ll need an appropriately sized wrench. While it’s draining, you can inspect the plug for any bends or cracks and replace it as needed. Tighten the plug once the oil has finished draining. Note: Make sure the engine is cold, or you may risk burning yourself on hot oil.
5. Remove the oil filter. This step can get messy. Place some towels around the filter and lift it out of its housing.
6. Install the new oil filter. Before placing the new filter, take some of the new oil and spread it around the small and large O-rings of the filter. When installing the new filter, make sure it is properly secured in its housing and appropriately tightened with the oil filter wrench.
7. Replace the skid plate. Once you’re sure the drain plug and oil filter are secured, you can reattach the bolts of the skid plate underneath the vehicle. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
8. Add the new oil. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual should guide you on how much oil your Range Rover Sport needs. Begin adding oil using the funnel, and continue to check it near the end to make sure you’re not overfilling the reservoir.
9. Check the oil level. Replace the oil cap and make sure it’s tightened. Turn on the ignition, but don’t start the vehicle. You can check the oil level by navigating to the Service Menu on the driver instrument display and selecting “Oil Level.”
